Where Are They Now - Victor Maddux '97

Victor Maddux '97 was one of the Big Red's finest-ever attackman.  A 2-time All America and 2-time All NCAC selection, he amassed 190 points (107g, 83a) during his career, ranking him #7 among all-time goal scorers and #8 in total points.  He still holds the single game total points record (12 vs Oberlin in 1997).  Victor currently lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife and 3 children.

What do you do now?
About 7 years ago I started a video production company called Automatic Sports (http://automaticsports.com) with a high school friend.  We focus primarily on sports related video productions.  We do everything from team highlight videos, personal recruiting videos to school marketing and fundraising campaigns.  Before I started Automatic Sports I worked at Mad Lax (retail lacrosse stores with locations in N. VA, MD and DC area).  Lacrosse is still very much a part of my professional and personal life.

Do you have a family?
Yes, I am married with 3 children.  2 boys (ages 4 and 3) and a baby girl (almost 1).  The boys both have fiddle sticks and I look forward to when they are able to get more involved with lacrosse.

Did you play/coach lacrosse after graduation?
Yes, I played in the DC area but recently had a stop because or reoccurring stingers.  I went to my doctor and found out that I have a herniated disk.  After graduation I was heavily involved in youth camps and coaching summer leagues.  It is something I am definitely interested in getting more involved as my kids get to that age.

What position did you play at Denison?
Attack

Did you have a defining moment as a Denison player?  What was it?
Freshman year we were playing OWU at home for the NCAC title.  OWU had won at least 4-5 straight conference titles so there was a lot of pressure for us to knock them off.  This game set the tone for the rivalry with OWU during my four years (1994-1997) at Denison.  We ended up beating OWU that game and it still sticks in my mind as one of the most memorable games during my days at Denison.  All the OWU games stick out in my mind because of the great rivalry that existed between the two teams.  At that time we played OWU at least twice per year and two years we were even matched up in the first round of the playoffs.  The intensity of the rivalry will always stick out in my mind.

Do you keep in touch with any of your old Denison teammates?
Yes, Alex Nephew (97’) and I are still very close, he is in New York but we still each other from time to time.  I am also still very close with Mark Masterson (96’), Murdoch Matheson (96’) and Michael Banks (96’) often.  Mark, Murdoch and I went to high school together so we have known each other for a long time!

Do you follow the current Denison program?
Yes, I frequently send Coach C emails about upcoming games or to congratulate him after a big win.  I try to make it out to local games here in DC and Baltimore as much as I can.  The webcast of the games has been great.  I was able to watch the entire W&L game from my work computer.   I look forward to catching as much action in 2012 as possible.

Do you see value in what the DLA does?
I do.  I think it is great to have an organization to help network current and former players.  I think it would be great if the DLA was able to help connect me with more alums in the DC area.

Would you like to help lead/participate in the DLA's offerings to the membership?  (e.g. web content, organize events, spearhead membership growth, make fund-raising phone calls, etc.).
I am interested in helping plan an event in DC before or after the team is out here.  I think there would be a great turn out to see the team and meet the alums, families and friends of the program.

Other Comments:
I actually sold my last house to a former Denison lacrosse player, Jon Staunton (02’).  It came up in conversation that he played at Denison when he was looking at my house.  Also, freshman midfielder and face-off specialist Chip Phillips Dad was one of my high school teachers.
