2011 LAKE PLACID GRAND MASTERS
The Denison Grandmasters made a successful return to the Lake Placid Classic in August 2011. Playing in Division 2 with 14 players, we weren't deep but played with a lot of heart as the #12 seed. On Thursday, we opened up with a 13-1 win over Philadelphia's Eagles. That set us up for a Friday game with Albany, when we raced out to a 6-2 lead and held on for an 8-6 victory to earn a trip to the semi-finals, a position that was common for the Big Red through most of its earlier years in the tournament.
Playing The Remnants on Saturday in the semis, the game was 1-1 at halftime, with Sean Weston (Denison '87) leading our stout defense. The Remnants ran up 3 goals in the third quarter, and held on for a 4-2 win. Their goalie was great, and our offense couldn't muster the firepower of previous games. While disappointed in Saturday's result, we were quite pleased to be playing in the 3rd place game on Sunday. The 5 Denison players on the squad were quite pleased to learn that our opponent would be OWU.
We started the OWU game with 14 players, but halfway through the 1st period, 3 players, including Scott Curtis ('84) and Gary Becker ('85) needed to depart to catch the ferry for early flights out of Burlington. Adding to our difficulties, our Defensive Leader Sean Weston was not dressed due to a troublesome back. Now, with only 10 players, we somehow had a 3-1 halftime lead. Feeling that the game was about to get out of hand at halftime, Westy summoned all of his inner strength and got his gear out of his car and suited up for the second half. We were able to control the ball for about 85% of the second half and eke out a 5-2 win. Lynn Wilson ('84) scored 2, Gary Becker 1, and Jim Shaler ('86) 1.
